Game of Atoms & Organisational Communication

University students playing a game of atoms to start a class. Teacher's orders. Who would have thought? but alas there was a point in the madness and fun.

Getting oneself into a group to accomplish an assigned task is the basis of the game of atoms and similarly the basis of an organisation. In an organisation there are different departments with varied responsibilities.

Therefore how does an organisation compare to a game of atoms?

1. There are groups/departments/divisions within an organisation. In the game of atoms one is told to get into groups of [some random # is called].

2. Within an organization, people can be easily reassigned to another division, not necessarily as quick as in atoms, but shifting or relocating is the basis of the game.

3. An organisation can be a highly competitive place. Since this is a game, a little competition is normal.

4. Within an organisation, people must learn how to be flexible; in relation to openness and willingness to meet    new people and work with them to achieve an end result. In the game, you may not necessarily know all the people that you are playing with, but you will need their assistance

5. At the workplace, rejection, bonding and triumph are all a part of the job, just as in the game.

6. You must have a strategy in order to reap success.

7. The game teaches you that there is NO 'i' in TEAM. One cannot have a group of 6 with only themselves. In an organisation, you have to work with the other members of your team.

This picture shows within the circle, all these people  belong to a group.  But if look closely you will see that there are groups of fours, and that some people will be left out, just as in the game
